Question from The Flood Hotline!

Q:           I live in the Great Bend Community in Extreme Southeastern Richland County. For the last few years, Lake Tewaukon (not a Lake, it’s a wildlife refuge) has been releasing water, causing overland flooding issues, washing out roads and making rural travel near impossible. Can’t something be done to stop this overland flooding issue from Tewaukon?    fhl

We asked  Richland County City Commissioner Perry Miller

A:            Tewaukon is a Wild Life Refuge, it is not a flood control mechanism, or a flood control project. It’s 15 – 17 ft deep and works the same as pouring water into a glass already full of water. The water you pour in comes right out. So water flowing into a full Tewaukon is going to flow right back out and cause overland flooding.
